The prevalence of HIV infection is low in most Pacific Island Countries (PICs). However, the transmission of HIV is often associated with other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). As there is high prevalence of STIs among high risk and vulnerable groups of populations in several PICs, there is a potential for increased HIV transmission.
It is essential that HIV prevention measures be continued and intensified. Achieving reduction in STI transmission is an effective way of reducing the risk of transmission of HIV.
