WHO activities to support the South Pacific

Workshop on ‘Health Promoting School in the Pacific: Building partnerships and scaling up local action’: This was a WHO workshop conducted in collaboration with Pacific Regional Initiative for Delivery of Basic Education (PRIDE) and co-hosted by Griffith University, in Brisbane, Australia. Being endorsed by the Ministers of Education meeting in 2006 after a presentation from WHO SP office, 15 forum member countries were represented with a participant each from Health and Education.

The main objectives were to discuss and share experiences on ways and means of scaling up action for Health Promoting Schools in the Pacific. The Health Promoting School Guideline for Western Pacific region which is being planned for review has been the main tool used by countries and was also a guide at the workshop. There was a recommendation that a Pacific network of Health Promoting Schools be formed and that countries developed MOUs between Health and Education for the strengthening of implementation of HPS in PICs.

Health Promoting Workplaces has also been implemented in quite a few PICs for Diet and Physical Activity. There is a Health promoting Workplace guideline developed for the Western Pacific region which most countries are using for implementing the programme. There are plans in place for the review of this guideline.
