Journalists are invited to meet the new Regional Director-nominee of the World Health Organization’s Western Pacific Region.
The election of the new Regional Director will take place on 22 September 2008, on the opening day of the annual meeting in Manila of WHO’s Regional Committee for the Western Pacific, the Organization's governing body in the Region.
The successful candidate will hold a press conference after the election, at about 4:30 p.m. on 22 September in WHO’s regional headquarters in Manila.
The contenders for the post are Dr Tee Ah Sian of Malaysia, Dr Shin Young-Soo of the Republic of Korea and Dr Viliami Ta'u Tangi of Tonga. The Regional Director nominee, upon confirmation by the WHO Executive Board, will succeed Dr Shigeru Omi of Japan, whose second five-year term ends on 31 January 2009.
Dr Tee, 60, is currently WHO's Director for Combating Communicable Diseases in the Western Pacific. Dr Shin, 64, is currently Professor at the College of Medicine at Seoul National University. Dr Tangi, 60, is currently the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health.
