10. Foreign exchange
The local currency is the Central Pacific Franc (XPF) or Xchange Pacific Franc (XPF). These are issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Franc coins and 500, 1 000, 5 000 and 10 000 Franc notes. New Zealand and Australian dollars are accepted for exchange by most hotels and banks.
All banks charge a US$ 5 commission on cash (except for euros) or travellers cheque transactions. Only the American Express office in Noumea does not levy this fee. Automated teller machines (ATMs) are located mostly in Noumea; they accept Mastercard, Visa, Eurocard and Carte Bleue. The maximum that can be withdrawn in any week is US$ 350. The duty-free shops, airline offices, hotels and restaurants in Noumea accept major credit cards, but outside the capital, they are only accepted at hotels.
The exchange rate is XPF 94.38 = US$ 1.
