New Horizons in Health

         The Regional Committee,

         Having considered the Regional Director's progress report on the implementation of New horizons in health;*

         Noting the way in which Member States are incorporating the concepts of New horizons in health into national policies and programmes, in particular the activities that are being carried out in Pacific island countries following the Rarotonga Agreement;

         Noting also the high level of correlation between New horizons in health indicators and the targets contained in Health for All in the Twenty-first Century;

         Noting further that data on implementation of the regular budget for the 1996-1997 biennium reveal that New horizons in health concepts are being widely implemented in the Region;

  1. URGES Member States:
    (1) to continue to develop policies, programmes and activities in line with the concepts of New horizons in health;
    (2) to allocate resources to programmes and activities that reflect the approaches of New horizons in health;
  2. REQUESTS the Regional Director:
    (1) to further promote the concepts and approaches of New horizons in health and Health for All in the Twenty-first Century with Member States of the Region;
    (2) to support where possible country initiatives which develop the concepts of New horizons in health;
    (3) to continue to work with countries to develop country-specific indicators and to support Member States to improve their capacity to collect, analyse and compare data on New horizons in health indicators;
    (4) to develop a strategic plan for the development of the information systems in the Region, incorporating methods of data collection, data harmonization, dissemination of information, data analysis and utilization, and human resource assessment, and to present the strategic plan to the fiftieth session of the Regional Committee.
