Country Visits: Report of the Sub-Committee of the Regional Committee on Programmes and Technical Cooperation, Part I

         The Regional Committee,

         Having considered the report of the Sub-Committee of the Regional Committee on Programmes and Technical Cooperation, Part I, on its visits to Fiji and Malaysia to review WHO's collaboration in the field of Healthy Cities and Healthy Islands, with particular reference to health information systems;*

         Appreciating the value of the work of the Sub-Committee to Member States and to the Regional Committee;

  1. THANKS the Sub-Committee for its work;
  2. ENDORSES the recommendations in the report of country visits of the Sub-Committee;
  3. URGES Member States that are planning and implementing Healthy Cities and Healthy Islands initiatives:
    (1) to pay attention to factors such as political commitment, community support, multidepartmental involvement, local ownership, an appropriate entry point and a conducive social and cultural milieu;
    (2) to ensure that improvement of health information systems should be an integral part of the initiatives;
    (3) to give due consideration to incorporating elements such as establishments of a national coordinating body, formulation of a national plan of action, delineation of core activities, and a mechanism to enable sharing of experiences;
    (4) to participate in the sharing of successes and lessons learned with other Healthy Cities and Healthy Islands projects;
  4. REQUESTS the Regional Director:
    (1) to continue to support Member States in this field through human resources development and professional advice;
    (2) to collaborate with Member States in developing health information systems which support Healthy Cities and Healthy Islands initiatives;
    (3) to continue to promote the concept and extension of Healthy Cities and Healthy Islands by facilitating the transfer of experience from established projects to new initiatives;
    (4) to explore future areas fro research and collaboration;
    (5) to develop and disseminate to Member States best practices, including guidelines and indicators, for Healthy Cities and Healthy Islands projects.
