Full Involvement of Women in all Aspects of the Work of WHO in the Western Pacific Region

         The Regional Committee,

         Having considered the report of the Regional Director on the full involvement of women in all aspects of the work of WHO in the Western Pacific Region;*

         Recalling resolutions WHA38.12, WHA49.9, EB91.R16, EB93.R17 and EB97.R12;

         Recalling also plans of action and recommendations made in several international forums over the last few decades, in order to improve and increase women's participation in the overall development process;

         Noting the current status of female representation on special bodies, advisory committees, expert panels and government delegations as well as the employment situation of women in the WHO Western Pacific Region;

         Recognizing the importance of also focusing on the impact of WHO activities on women, and the ability of women to participate in and benefit from those activities;

  1. STRESSES the importance of increasing the representation of women in higher-graded professional posts in WHO;
  2. URGES Member States:
    (1) to identify appropriate females to participate in government delegations, special bodies and representations, and fellowship programmes, and as candidates for employment in WHO;
    (2) to increase training opportunities for women;
  3. REQUESTS the Regional Director:
    (1) to continue efforts to reach the 30% target for representation of women in the professional category;
    (2) to report to the Regional Committee on progress made.
