WHO Response to Global Change: Report of the Sub-Committee, Part III

         The Regional Committee,

         Noting the report of the Sub-Committee of the Regional Committee on Programmes and Technical Cooperation, Part III: WHO response to global change;*

         Recognizing the need to continue reform of the Organization and to ensure WHO's leadership in health;

         Supporting the multisectoral approach to solving health problems;

         Appreciating the changes that have already taken place in the Region as part of the ongoing reform processes in the work of the Organization;

         Welcoming the continuing review of the work of the Organization;

  1. ENDORSES the recommendations of the Sub-Committee;
  2. ENCOURAGES the process of constitutional review as laid down by the World Health Assembly resolution WHA48.14 and Executive Board decision EB97(11);
  3. EMPHASIZES the value of the Sub-Committee as a working body of the Regional Committee, and of the country visits for information gathering and exchange of experiences among countries of the Region, and of evaluating the impact of WHO's cooperation with Member States in relation to the implementation of the regional strategies for health for all;
  4. REQUESTS the Regional Director:
    (1) to continue to undertake the reform measures, as described in the report on the WHO response to global change** aligning the work of the Organization closely to the present and future needs of Member States in the spirit of global change;
    (2) to report to the Regional Committee on ongoing work on reform in the annual health situation report and the relevant agenda items before the Regional Committee;
    (3) to convey the summary records of the discussion on this item to the special group of the Executive Board considering review of the WHO Constitution.
