Infant and Young Child Nutrition

         The Regional Committee,

         Recalling resolutions WHA33.32, WHA34.22, WHA35.26, WHA47.5, WPR/RC32.R11, WPR/RC33.R16, WPR/RC34.R18, and WPR/RC44.R6;

         Having reviewed the report of the Regional Director on infant and young child nutrition and implementation of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes;*

         Acknowledging in particular the cooperation amongst FAO, UNICEF, WHO, and other organizations in the field of nutrition, aimed at developing national plans of action for nutrition including the promotion of breast-feeding;

         Noting the increasing number of baby-friendly hospitals;

         Noting also that, notwithstanding the measures initiated by Member States to improve infant and young child nutrition, the prevalence of breast-feeding is still declining in several countries and areas;

  1. URGES Member States:
    (1) to intensify efforts directed towards the improvement of infant and young child nutrition, in particular establishing baby- friendly hospitals and suitable measures to give effect to the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, including nutrition education;
    (2) to report at regular intervals on the progress made in their national efforts;
  2. REQUESTS the Regional Director to extend cooperation in breast-feeding promotion, in the exchange of information, and in training and research activities.
