The Regional Committee,
Having considered the Regional Director's report on health and environment; *
Recalling resolution WHA44.27 of the World Health Assembly on urban health development;
Recognizing the great importance and complexity of environmental health problems in the Region, and the associated need for exploring new approaches to programme development and implementation;
- ENDORSES the development of a new healthy urban environment initiative using multidisciplinary approaches;
- URGES Member States:
- (1) to ensure the inclusion of environmental health considerations in the planning stages of development projects;
- (2) to influence the private sector to take environmental health issues into account in their development and marketing strategies;
- REQUESTS the Regional Director:
- (1) to continue, as a matter of priority, the delineation of new regional initiatives to enhance future environmental health programme development and implementation;
- (2) to collaborate with other external support agencies to encourage the public and private sectors to take environmental health issues into account in their development and marketing strategies.
