Leprosy

         The Regional Committee,

         Having considered the Regional Director's report on leprosy; *

         Recalling resolution WHA44.9 of the World Health Assembly on the global elimination of leprosy as a public health problem by the year 2000; **

         Noting the improvement in the leprosy situation in the Region due mainly to widespread implementation of multidrug therapy;

         Recognizing the high level of support provided by Member States, nongovernmental organizations and donor agencies for leprosy control;

  1. URGES Member States:
    (1)  to make a strong political commitment to the elimination of leprosy in their respective countries;
    (2)  to make available the resources necessary to ensure that all leprosy patients are receiving multidrug therapy by 1995;
  2. REQUESTS the Regional Director:
    (1)  to provide Member States with the technical support needed for their leprosy control programmes, in order to achieve full implementation of multidrug therapy by 1995 and the elimination of leprosy by the year 2000;
    (2)  to coordinate with Member States, nongovernmental organizations and donor agencies the mobilization of resources needed for the elimination of leprosy.
