WHO's Public Image

         The Regional Committee,

         Having considered the report of the Regional Director setting out a proposed plan of action for the promotion of WHO's image; *

         Recognizing that the World Health Organization must ensure continuing public acceptance of its role and its relevance in the prevailing conditions of scarce and diminishing resources;

         Affirming that health officials, health workers, WHO staff, and the staff of various international and nongovernmental organizations all have a role to play in promoting among the general public and the political leadership the humanitarian and constructive ideals for which WHO stands, as an organization dedicated to the achievement of health for all;

  1. ENDORSES the proposed plan of action to promote WHO's public image;
  2. URGES Member States, in cooperation with WHO, to make full use of opportunities such as World Health Day and other significant events involving WHO to issue public statements and promote activities that further advance the cause of health and, as a consequence, reinforce WHO's image as the global authority on health issues;
  3. REQUESTS the Regional Director to undertake information and advocacy activities that will at the same time further the cause of health for all and project the image of WHO to the widest possible audience, particularly at country level;
  4. DECIDES that, on behalf of the WHO Western Pacific Region, a delegate of China should address the World Health Assembly during the celebration of the fortieth anniversary of WHO and that a delegate of Tonga should take part in the discussion to mark the tenth anniversary of the Declaration of Alma-Ata.
