The Regional Committee,
Having considered the report of the Regional Director; *
Recalling resolutions WHA30.49, WHA31.33, WHA40.33 and WPR/RC36.R6;
Recognizing that traditional medicine, herbal medicine and acupuncture in particular, may be of value for utilization in the health services;
Commending the work done on the standardization of acupuncture nomenclature;
- URGES Member States:
- (1) to establish or further develop programmes on traditional medicine in the light of their specific needs and circumstances;
- (2) to undertake research in regard to traditional medicine, particularly in the following areas:
- (a) inventory surveys of medicinal plants;
- (b) the quality control of traditional drugs;
- (c) evaluation of the safety and efficacy of traditional medicine, based on the concepts of both modem and traditional medicine:
- (d) the cost-effectiveness of traditional medicine;
- (3) to strengthen training in traditional medicine for different categories of health personnel;
- (4) to share experience and information in regard to traditional medicine freely with one another;
- REQUESTS the Regional Director:
- (1) to cooperate with Member States in the formulation and implementation of traditional medicine programmes;
- (2) to undertake work in relation to standardization of the terminology used in herbal medicine;
- (3) to support information exchange on traditional medicine among Member States through a network of collaborating centres and participating institutes as well as through publications and scientific meetings.
