Tobacco or Health

         The Regional Committee,

         Recalling resolution WHA39.14 on tobacco or health;

         Expressing its concern at the serious public health problem in the Region due to the current pandemic of tobacco smoking;

         Further expressing concern at the health effects of the increase in the use of non-smoked tobacco products in some countries of the Region;

         Noting with satisfaction the recent progress made in the development of the regional and country programmes;

  1. URGES Member States:
    (1) to intensify their efforts to initiate and develop programmes for tobacco or health as an integral part of their health development;
    (2) to stimulate further public awareness of the health hazards posed by the use of tobacco and of the value of prevention through the establishment of national health education programmes, with emphasis on the inclusion of health education in the school curriculum at primary and secondary school levels;
    (3) to take the necessary measures to ensure that non-smokers receive effective protection from involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke in public places such as means of transport, health-related premises, restaurants, and places of work and entertainment;
    (4) to monitor trends in smoking and other forms of tobacco use as well as in tobacco-related diseases, and to evaluate the effectiveness of national programmes on tobacco or health;
  2. REQUESTS the Regional Director:
    (1) to support Member States in establishing or strengthening programmes for tobacco or health;
    (2) to promote coordination with other United Nations agencies and nongovernmental organizations in tobacco or health activities;
    (3) to collaborate with Member States in mobilizing possible sources of financial support for their programmes.
