Thirty-seventh session

WPR/RC37.R10

Representation of the Western Pacific Region on the Executive Board

         The Regional Committee,

         Recalling resolution WPR/RC35.R10;

         Noting with satisfaction the provisions of resolution WHA39.6 amending Articles 24 and 25 of the Constitution and increasing the membership of the Executive Board from 31 to 32;

         Acknowledging with gratitude the support of the Executive Board in that connection;

         Recognizing, however, that the said amendments will only come into force when accepted by two-thirds of the Members in accordance with their respective constitutional processes and through the deposit of a formal instrument of acceptance with the Secretary-General of the United Nations;

         Expressing its concern that the Western Pacific Region, in spite of having the largest population of any WHO region, will continue to be underrepresented on the Executive Board until such time as the above amendments are ratified;

  1. EXPRESSES its appreciation to the World Health Assembly for adopting the amendments to Articles 24 and 25 of the Constitution, increasing the membership of the Executive Board from 31 to 32 so that the number of Members from the Western Pacific Region entitled to designate a person to serve on the Executive Board can be increased to four;
  2. URGES Member States to take all necessary steps, including approaches to Member States in other regions, to expedite the process of ratification in accordance with Article 73 of the Constitution by depositing their formal instruments of acceptance of the amendments with the Secretary-General of the United Nations as soon as possible.
