Development of Health Research

         The Regional Committee,

         Having considered the report of the Regional Director on the development of health research;*

  1. NOTES with satisfaction:
    (1) the improved linkages between the Regional Committee and the Western Pacific Advisory Committee on Medical Research such as the inclusion of Regional Committee resolutions relevant to health research as an item on the agenda of the Advisory Committee and the attendance of the Chairman of the Regional Committee at the meeting of the Advisory Committee;
    (2) the initiative taken by the Regional Director to coordinate and orient health research towards the attainment of health for all by the year 2000;
  2. ENDORSES the recommendations of the Western Pacific Advisory Committee on Medical Research at its tenth session, as described in the Regional Director's report;
  3. URGES Member States:
    (1) to include the provision for biomedical, health systems and health behavioural research in their national policies, plans and resource allocation related to the goal of health for all;
    (2) to ensure that national programme planning for health research is kept under continual review in order to relate health research to overall national policies or goals;
    (3) to intensify their cooperation, and particularly cooperation between developed and developing countries, in building up the scientific and technological infrastructure, which is essential for technology development within countries and for technology transfer between countries;
  4. REQUESTS the Regional Director to implement the recommendations of the Western Pacific Advisory Committee on Medical Research.
