Monitoring of Progress in Implementing the Strategies for Health for All by the Year 2000

         The Regional Committee,

         Having considered Part II of the report of the Sub-Committee on the General Programme of Work;*

         Noting the views expressed by the Sub-Committee and representatives during the current session;

         Recognizing the magnitude of the tasks to be undertaken in order to improve social justice in health;

         Recognizing also that the monitoring of progress in implementing the strategies for health for all by the year 2000 is a continuing and dynamic process, reporting on which will take place every two years, leading to improvement as experience is gained;

  1. URGES Member States:
    (1) to continue to develop and further improve their monitoring and evaluation systems for the purpose of identifying problems and to undertake appropriate corrective measures for the effective implementation of strategies for health for all by the year 2000 which will lead to enhancement of the social relevance and effectiveness of national health systems;
    (2) to reorient and strengthen their national health information systems, incorporating global and regional indicators where relevant, in order to provide effective and efficient support to the monitoring of progress in implementing the strategies and evaluating their effectiveness;
    (3) to initiate activities relevant to the development of mechanisms and procedures for evaluating. in 1985, the effectiveness of national strategies for health for all by the year 2000, which will include the provision of data on health indicators for geographical and social groups;
  2. REQUESTS the Regional Director:
    (1) to review the relevance of the global and regional indicators identified at present for the monitoring of national strategies for health for all by the year 2000, as well as the questions on this subject posed to Member States as a basis for reporting, and to modify them as necessary;
    (2) to transmit the progress report to the Director-General together with the comments of representatives, informing him that it is hoped to present improved and more complete reports in the future.
