Development of Health Research

         The Regional Committee,

         Having considered the report of the Regional Director on the development of health research;**

  1. NOTES with satisfaction:
    (1) the Regional Director's initiative in reorienting existing research priorities, with their emphasis on disease control, by giving greater consideration to health systems research, appropriate technology for health and the behavioural aspects of health, in the light of the long-term social goal of health for all by the year 2000;
    (2) the keen interest shown by some Member States in developing effective national coordination mechanisms for ensuring optimal research programme planning as part of the managerial process for national health development;
    (3) the gradual increase in national research capability and resources, including manpower trained in research methodology;
  2. ENDORSES the main recommendations of the Western Pacific Advisory Committee on Medical Research at its seventh session, as described in the Regional Director's report;
  3. REQUESTS Member States:
    (1) further to improve their national health research management systems and thus capabilities for reviewing and updating national research policy, in order to relate health research activities even more closely to the implementation of national strategies for health for all by the year 2000;
    (2) to continue to aim at self-reliance in carrying out health research that can effectively contribute to the solutions of priority problems;
  4. REQUESTS the Regional Director to implement the recommendations of the Western Pacific Advisory Committee on Medical Research.
