Prevention of Road Traffic Accidents

         The Regional Committee,

         Having considered the Regional Director's report on prevention of road traffic accidents, *

         Recognizing the increasing threat to life and health caused by road traffic accidents and the need to intensify WHO collaboration in the prevention of such accidents;

  1. URGES Member States:
    (1) to collaborate in the development of national road safety programmes;
    (2) to develop measures for preventing traffic accidents and reducing their consequences, such as disability, loss of life expectancy and reduced productivity;
  2. REQUESTS the Regional Director:
    (1) to collect and collate available information from Member States of the Region on the incidence and severity of traffic accidents, as well as on resources being utilized in national road safety programmes;
    (2) to pursue analysis of the situation by other means considered appropriate;
    (3) to collaborate with Member States on request in establishing projects within the framework of the WHO global programme on prevention of road traffic accidents, including the possibility of establishing a multidisciplinary pilot study in the Western Pacific Region.
